Sustainable Fashion doesn’T have to be Boring

The fashion industry has an enormous carbon footprint and we want to do better. but it often feels like every eco fashion brand is so… beige. Environmentally friendly clothing conjures up an image of a natural linen dress, hanging on a white wall, next to a plant. But we believe that being a more conscious consumer shouldn’t feel so… muted. In fact, it should be the exact opposite. Shout out your values from your rooftops! Let your clothes echo your voice and spotlight your personality. Be the star that you are.

If we can’t be in tropical paradise, the second best thing is seeing our rentals in use there! (But we would still rather be there ourselves…)

      Clothes are like books.
      .
We buy books, read them once, and with the exception of an occasional classic that we want to keep, usually just pass it along to a friend so we can get a new one. Otherwise they sit around and collect dust or wait to be donated.
      .
Clothes are the same. How many items do we buy to wear just once or twice before we realize we want something else?
      .
Think of renting fashion as a giant clothing library! Constant newness, short term use, and less clutter in your closet.
Give us a 🙋🏻‍♀️ if this resonates with you!

I’m about to share a really embarrassing story.
      .
It all begins with whitewashing. Growing up as a child of immigrants in the Midwest, I always knew I was different. I just wanted to fit in. I longed for my eyes to be the same shape as them. For my name to sound like theirs. I had no idea what a casserole was but it had to be better than Chinese food. (Oh how wrong I was about so many things). I even wished I could go to CCD on Sunday instead of Chinese School. (Again questionable thinking).
      .
I tried to bury as much of my Asian heritage as possible. I thought I was doing a good job of blending in. Until someone would call me a Twinkie or a Banana and I would be reminded that I wasn’t.
      .
So I tried harder. Went to college in the south. Joined a “white” sorority. Hung out with mostly White friends. Absorbed as much White pop culture as possible. Decided not to go to medical school.
      .
Then I moved to LA. And LA was obviously a much more diverse place. And here’s the embarrassing story...
A local club was promoting “Asian night” and there was a long line of Asians outside. My White friends suggested we go check it out. I took one look at that crowd of people who looked like me and it made me so uncomfortable to be associated with them that I blurted out defensively and only half jokingly, “um no. I’m not Asian! I’m from Pittsburgh!”
      .
My friends thought that was the funniest thing they had ever heard. I had spent so long pretending to be White that I had no idea how ridiculous that would sound to anyone else. Clearly I was trying to hide from something I could never hide from.
      .
Over the years I would gradually learn to accept and embrace my heritage. And it has taken this recent movement of amplifying Asian voices for me to truly feel pride in being an Asian American and to understand what it means.
I’ve taken a pledge to continue to speak out and to share so that we can continue to grow as a community, and as a country. Will you speak out with me?

      “So, Where are you from?”
      .
      “I’m from LA.”
      .
“No, but where are you *really* from?”
      .
“Oh well I grew up in Pittsburgh, but was born in Connecticut.”
      .
“Ok but what is your background?”
      .
“OH, ok so my parents are Taiwanese born Chinese.”
      .
“Taiwan- is that like Thailand?” 🤦🏻‍♀️
      .
It’s a question that every Asian American has been asked so often, it almost becomes something we just expect and perhaps accept as normal because we’ve been trained to not speak up about our feelings. It’s often asked in an innocent way, because naturally people are curious. And sometimes it’s asked less innocently and with questionable intentions.
      .
But let’s talk about these questions as micro-aggressions that we face daily. Whether it’s innocent or not, it’s a constant reminder that despite our best efforts to “fit in,” people will ALWAYS see us as “different,” as “outsiders,” as UNAMERICAN. Regardless of our birth place, the color of our hair and skin, the shape of our eyes, the foods we eat- these will always spur people to wonder if we “belong” here.
      .
So is it ok to ask? Yes, I think so, but once you’ve gotten to know someone and not as the first question you ask. Make your intentions clear so they don’t have to decipher. Perhaps one day, we’ll be so mixed and accepting of differences that this question will no longer feel like a question of our belonging. Because we DO belong here.
      .
One more thing- while it’s ok to be curious about another person’s ethnicity, NEVER ask in this way...
      .
      “So what ARE you, anyway?”
      .
How much more offensive can that be? What does it even mean? I’m human. We’re all human. And to ask what else I could be is completely not ok.
      .
